John Andretti Finishes 16th at LoudonJune 28, 2009 After starting 35th due to a rained out qualifying session, John Andretti finished 16th in a rain shortened race at Loudon, New Hampshire. The Front Row Motorsports team utilized an off-cycle fuel strategy to put the #34 Taco Bell Chevy as high as 11th place until the caution fell for rain. Staying out, the team was close to running out of fuel under caution when the pace car brought the field down pit road for the red flag. Andretti maintained his 16th position when the Lenox Industrial Tools 301 was called for rain 15 minutes later. Andretti gained 60 points on the #82 Red Bull Toyota after Scott Speed spun into the wall earlier in the race, ending his day with a 35th place finish. This gives the #34 team a 155 point lead in the owner's points, thus helping to secure their 35th position even further, which guarantees their starting position in future races. |
It's Good To Be King...againposted 06/22/09 4:32 pm (Sports Network) - Wearing his signature cowboy hat and sunglasses, "King" Richard Petty walked into Victory Lane at Infineon Raceway to congratulate his winning driver and take a swig of red wine as part of the victory celebration. Kahne gave Petty his first win as a team owner in a decade, dating back to when John Andretti drove the legendary No.43 STP car to victory in the 1999 spring race at Martinsville. Kahne, who had never finished better than 23rd at Sonoma, held off points leader and six-time road course winner Tony Stewart on several late-race restarts to win the Toyota/Save Mart 350. John Andretti finishes 30th at SonomaAfter a challenging weekend, John Andretti finished 30th in the Toyota Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway. Utilizing an alternative pit strategy, Andretti ran as high as 4th in the #34 Taco Bell Chevy. Unfortunately, numerous cautions and an ill-handling race car forced the Front Row Motorsports entry back to the 30th position. The highlight of the weekend was that Andretti and the #34 team were able to gain additional points over the #82 Red Bull team in the Owner's Standings, due to Scott Speed failing to qualify for the race. This gives Andretti a 95 point cushion over the 36th position. |
Sears Point: TRG, Gilliland practice crash notes
Racing series NASCAR-CUP TRG Motorsports has Leased the Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates No. 1 for Infineon Sonoma, Calif., (June 20, 2009) - TRG Motorsports has leased the No. 1 Chevrolet Impala SS from Earnhardt Ganassi for the Toyota Save Mart 350 to be run at Infineon Raceway tomorrow, Sunday, June 21. Gilliland will be relegated to the back of the field for the start of the race. In today's first practice, David Gilliland was involved in an accident exiting pit road when he collided with the No. 34 of John Andretti. The damage to the No. 71 Adobe Road Winery Chevrolet Impala SS was too extensive to repair. The team, working on a very tight budget, had their short track car as a backup. The management at Earnhardt Ganassi offered their Martin Truex Jr. road course backup car, which finished 16th here last year and fifth at Watkins Glen, and TRG Motorsports team principal Kevin Buckler gladly accepted. Ambrose, Gilliland, Andretti have rough practice
By JENNA FRYER, AP Auto Racing Writer SONOMA, Calif. (AP)—It was an eventful final few minutes of practice Saturday at Infineon Raceway, where David Gilliland ran into John Andretti and Marcos Ambrose blew an engine. Ambrose’s motor exploded in a plume of white smoke with just a few minutes left in practice, and because he’ll have to get a new engine, he’ll forfeit his third-place starting position for Sunday’s race. "It’s really a real shame for us,” Ambrose said. “We were looking for a great day tomorrow and now we have to come through field. But we have good horsepower and we’ll bounce back from this.” Ambrose will have to move to the back of the field before the start of the race. “We came from dead last last year at Watkins Glen and finished third, so it can be done,” Ambrose said. “But we’ll have to make some gambles on fuel mileage now to get up there.” Gilliland, who was slated to start 32nd, will have a much harder time matching last year’s career-best finish of second. He wrecked his primary car when he ran into the back of Andretti as the two were leaving pit road during practice. “It was totally my fault,” Gilliland said. “I didn’t have any of my blowers or anything on, just reached down to turn on the switches and John Andretti stopped for cars merging, and I just ran right into the back of him. Completely my fault and really disappointed.” Full Story on Yahoo Sports |

Hamlin Multitasking in Kentucky and Michigan
June 12th, 2009 - Concord, NC Kevin Hamlin will be pulling double duty this weekend at Kentucky and Michigan, but in a different way than that of his NASCAR counterparts. Not only will Hamlin’s name scroll past twice on the ribbon during NASCAR Nationwide Series practice Friday at Kentucky, but the driver will also head to the spotter’s stand for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race in Michigan on Sunday. Hamlin will practice in two different Nationwide Series cars on Friday at Kentucky Speedway when the series heads to the Blue Grass State for the Meijer 300 Presented by Ritz. Juggling practice time in two different Nationwide Series cars at Kentucky Speedway on Friday, Hamlin will pilot the No. 34 Chevrolet for Front Row Motorsports as well as the No. 49 Chevrolet for Jay Robinson Racing. Although Tony Raines will drive the No. 34 in the Nationwide Series race on Saturday, he will be in Michigan for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice and qualifying and unable to be in Kentucky for practice. Although already committed to practice the No. 34 for Front Row Motorsports, Hamlin was asked by Jay Robinson Racing to take over driving duties in the No. 49 Chevrolet for Saturday’s Meijer 300 Presented by Ritz. The No. 49, owned by Jay Robinson, currently stands 41st in owner points and must qualify on time to enter the race. Hamlin’s race duties don’t end with the checkered flag in Kentucky. Immediately following the Nationwide Series Meijer 300 Presented by Ritz, Hamlin will travel to Brooklyn, Michigan to spot for Front Row Motorsports driver John Andretti for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series LifeLock 400 at Michigan International Speedway. The 29 year old driver is determined to find a full time position as a NASCAR driver and in that pursuit is taking every opportunity offered to him to drive, even if it does result in extra effort. In addition to his race weekend duties, Hamlin is a test driver for Earnhardt Ganassi Racing. Practice for the Meijer 300 Presented by Ritz will start at 5 p.m. ET with the second session broadcast live at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2. Qualifying for the 200 lap race will begin at 5 p.m., and live coverage of the 13th race of the NASCAR Nationwide Series season will begin at 8 p.m. ET. Both will be broadcast live on ESPN2. John Andretti thrilled to have been in IndyRacing series NASCAR-CUP INDYCAR Date 2009-06-02 (Dover, DE) By Joe Jennings - Motorsport.com The Indianapolis 500 continues to be one of the biggest races in the world and top-name drivers from various disciplines want to be part of the famed race at least once. For John Andretti, his motivation may well be greater than it is for the others. Growing up in the shadows of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, he has been part of the sights and sounds of the event since childhood. Each of his 10 races has been like a Christmas Day to him. For the 93rd edition of the Indianapolis 500, Andretti's desire to compete was so strong that he took a leave of absence from his NASCAR Sprint Cup team, which is unheard of in these uncertain times. After a month of frustration, Andretti only made the race in the final minutes of qualifications, achieving a 28th starting position and finishing on the lead lap in the 19th spot. Andretti's Window World Honda team drew heaps of attention throughout the month of May as the car was entered by Richard Petty Motorsports in a partnership with the Dreyer & Reinbold team. Even though Petty has been in Indianapolis often, he only witnessed the race for the first time a year ago. Subsequently, Andretti convinced Petty to return as a car owner and with the support of Window World, his Sprint Cup sponsor, the deal was structured. Although Andretti had been away from the IndyCar Series for a while, he thought it wouldn't be difficult to qualify for the race. But his theory ran aground quickly when he couldn't find the requisite speed until the waning minutes of qualifications. Also, he had to rebound from a hard crash that wrecked his car. "There are guys that walk into the place, and I was one of them, and think I will never have trouble jumping into the show," he said with frustration. "It was an ulcer- provoking month, and it showed that you can't let your guard down at Indy. The reality is that it makes you appreciate the race that much more." Andretti and his team recovered from their pre-race woes to hold their own in the long race. "We didn't do anything spectacular, and we finished where we deserved to," the articulate driver said. "We gained spots and lost them in the pits, but we did our best on the track, which made me feel good. On one restart, we got blocked and I lost 10 spots. We tried all sorts of things during the race, but overall, considering the month we had, we did better than expected.' Petty was impressed with Andretti's performance and said he would like to return as long as his driver has a competitive car. "I thought he done good," the NASCAR star said. "I was real satisfied with the race team and the way John drove the car, and he didn't run into anybody." "Richard (Petty) is much more of a friend than anything else," Andretti said of his team owner. "And having a friend that everyone knows makes it more special. The guy is golden and everyone knows he's a great person. He walked to the starting grid with me, and we talked quite a bit. He cautioned me about taking chances, as he knows that sometimes I will push it over the edge. Richard said to me, 'Rest assured, it is a big race, but it is just another race.' He was worried about my well being, which he's always been." The team's sponsor was pleased with its investment. "Window World was over the moon with the exposure," Andretti said afterward. "They were treated well and now everyone knows who the company is." Andretti was near many of the accidents that took place, but he managed to avoid them. "Just about every crash happened in front of me," he said. "The Tony Kanaan accident threw debris all the way through the turn, and it was interesting getting through there." Regarding the aborted start, he stated, "I didn't like the wave off. In my opinion, we have never had a great start, so why try it now. The starts have been ugly since the late 1950s, and there hasn't been a good one as long as I have been there. Sometimes the second start becomes a problem." With this year's Indianapolis 500 concluded, Andretti has returned to his Sprint Cup team, competing in the Autism Speaks 400 at the Dover International Speedway where he qualified 41st and finished 34th. Turning the calendar ahead, Andretti wants to be back in Indiana next May and he would really like do the double -- compete in the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. Given his intense desire to be a part of the Indianapolis 500 anything is possible. Full Story on MotorSport.com |
