Andretti out early in Indianapolis

Sunday, May 30, 2010

John Andretti is out of today's Indy 500 early after an apparent mechanical issue put him into the wall.

Andretti started 28th in today's race and appeared to be on the move early, picking up 10 positions in the first 10 laps. He moved up to 14th place before he was black flagged for blocking and forced to serve a pass through penalty. Andretti served his penalty, but within the first few laps of coming back onto the race track, had a problem entering the turn, putting him into the wall and out of the race.

Looks like a 30th place finish...

Open Letter to Indy Race Control

Monitoring and contolling a professional racing event is certainly a challenging task which will always be questioned by those who are not in the booth. Many decisions have to be made very quickly with limited information, and without the benefit of hindsight. That being said, here are a few suggestions for Brian Barnhart and his crew.

1) Get new glasses. Your current prescriptions are obviously outdated.
2) Put down the Cheetos and pay attention to what's happening on the track.
3) When making calls, try doing it with a little consistency.
4) You all have access to the video feeds and replays. Use them.

Early in the race, Graham Rahal dove down across three lanes to block another car. Penalty? Warning.

E.J. Viso threw a block on John Andretti, actually hitting his car. No call whatsoever.

John Andretti gets penalized for blocking Dan Wheldon going into turn one. The replay clearly showed Andretti holding his line until, with a car length lead over Wheldon, he turned down for entry into the turn, after Wheldon had backed off and was no longer gaining ground. In fact, Wheldon never got closer to Andretti than a full car length and Andretti held his line until it was clear that Wheldon had no chance of attempting a pass in the corner. I was under the apparently mistaken impression that a block consitutes one car making an attempt to impede the forward progress of another. Result? Penalty for blocking.

Shortly after, Graham Rahal gets a blocking penalty for blocking Dan Wheldon coming out of turn two (hmmm, seeing a pattern here?). Once again, review of the footage shows that upon exiting two, Rahal pulled down to the inside, BEFORE Wheldon. Rahal moved low, Wheldon followed, tried to pass in the grass (didn't work), and Rahal gets penalized for blocking?? Are you kidding? The only penalty that should have been handed out over that incident is to Wheldon for being stupid.

Update - Race Control redeems themselves slightly with their black flag of the 99, after Townsend Bell almost ran Ryan Hunter-Reay into the frontstretch wall.

Andretti Qualifies to Make 11th Indy 500 Start

INDIANAPOLIS (May 23, 2010) After waving off his first attempt at qualifying for the 2010 Indianapolis 500 on Saturday, John Andretti qualified the #43 Team Window World car today with an average lap time of 224.518. Andretti will start in row 10 next Sunday, May 30.

Fortunately, we were first out in qualifying today, Andretti said. After making some big changes yesterday, we are happy with the Window World Dallaras performance.

Though the car already had a place in the field, the team decided to head back out on the track for practice later in the afternoon.

We went back out to do some race runs after qualifying, so were still learning more about the car, said Andretti.

Well be leaning against my teammates again to find out more in order to prep for next week. Im really happy well all be racing next weekend. From my experience here, Ive learned if youre in it, you can win it. IZOD IndyCar drivers will take the track again on Friday for their last practice before the 2010 Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 30.

John Andretti Loves to Feel 16 Again

May 16, 2010

John Andretti has found the fountain of youth -- and it's in the cockpit of an IndyCar.

Once he straps in, the 47-year-old Renaissance man of racing says he feels like a kid again, and plans to continue to drive that way.

During an interview Friday, Andretti talked about the role of money in racing throughout his career, some of the trends he's seen, tips for battling the Goliaths and how long he'll continue to go racing.

pressdog: Tell me about Indy qualifying. Is it one of those deals where you have to change your underwear after or not a big thing?

John Andretti: Its as easy as your car makes it. If your car is not cooperating, its very miserable. If you are struggling for seed or you have a car that just wont find speed, then you have to give more to it and it sort of raises the hair on the back of your head to make it faster and its no fun.

Its all over the place. Ive had cars that where really good and and really comfortable and they were quick. Ive had other ones that I got out I was so glad it was over. The biggest problem with Indianapolis is it's the biggest race and so everything is on the line for that. If you qualify for the 500, youve got a shot at winning the 500. Even if they qualify for the 500 and go out on lap one, you were still in the Indy 500.

Its pretty hair raising. Lot of anxiety and it all depends on your car. If you have a really fast car the only disappointment you have is maybe not getting the pole or qualifying quite as good as you should have. Thats a good disappointment to have.

John Andretti not sure $20 million bonus enough to attract NASCAR stars

By Steve Ballard
Posted: May 16, 2010

If you change it, they will come. Or will they? John Andretti isn't so sure.

The NASCAR veteran and 10-time Indianapolis 500 starter isn't convinced that $20 million is enough to entice a significant number of NASCAR drivers to come to Indy even if the starting time is changed to accommodate them.

"There's still the big issue of priorities," said Andretti, who is driving this month for his cousin Michael's team. "And anybody who comes into somebody else's backyard to race is going to be a long shot."

Bruton Smith, owner of Charlotte Motor Speedway, said this week he is working on a deal with Indianapolis Motor Speedway to put up $20 million for any driver who could win the Indy 500 and NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. Andretti is one of three drivers to have run both races on one day. He was the first, in 1994. Tony Stewart did it in '99 and 2001, and Robby Gordon did it four times, most recently in '04. Stewart was the only one to have much success, finishing sixth at Indy and third at Charlotte in '01.

Andretti said former Indy 500 champions Juan Pablo Montoya (2000) and Sam Hornish Jr. (2006) would be the most logical given their history and the fact their NASCAR teams -- Team Penske for Hornish and Ganassi Racing for Montoya -- are the top two Izod IndyCar Series teams.

"But that's not saying they would want to do it," Andretti said.

As for the likes of Kevin Harvick, Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch, he said: "They're all racers. They could do it. Would they? I don't know."

He was more definitive in the cases of four-time NASCAR champions Jeff Gordon, who like Andretti grew up in the Indianapolis area, and Jimmie Johnson.

"I doubt if $20 million is going to be enough," he said with a grin. "That's only a new jet for them."

John Andretti to drive Hill Climb pace car

May 12, 2010 12:09 PM

A member of one Americas most famous motorsports families will drive the official pace car June 27 to open the 88th Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

Super star John Andretti will be the Grand Marshall and behind the wheel of a sizzling new Porsche Panamera Turbo at the start of the Race To The Clouds in Colorado Springs. The Pace Car is provided by Porsche of Colorado Springs for the nations second-oldest motor sports event behind only the Indianapolis 500.

Andretti is perhaps the nations most versatile driver, and has won in CART, NHRA, Top Fuel Dragsters, endurance racing and NASCAR stock car racing.

Though its the first time that Andretti has been on hand for the legendary race, his famous uncle, Mario, won the title at the 1969 Hill Climb when it was part of the USAC National Championship series.

Im really looking forward to being at Pikes Peak, Andretti said. Its probably one of the top motorsports events where the rules have not eliminated ingenuity, and its such a unique event, cars, people and an element of risk. Its going to be tough for me not to jump in somebodys car and head for the top.

Andretti will appear courtesy of Window World Cares and Window World Racing, which support St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital. Its goal is to raise $1.4 million as part of the Pay For A Day campaign to support the facility.

A driver since age 9, Andretti has been behind the wheel of almost everything with four wheels underneath it, a few with two wheels and a couple with treads and runners. Starting in sanctioned go-kart racing, Andretti has made his mark in all forms of auto racing including USAC midgets, IndyCars, NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and NASCAR.

Born to racer Aldo Andretti - twin to Indy car legend Mario Andretti, John Andretti had racing streaming through his blood. It doesnt stop at his bloodline however, as Andrettis godfather happens to be another Indy car legend - A.J. Foyt. Despite the rich family history it was John who branched out, and today, has become one of the most versatile drivers on the Andretti racing family tree.

After his birth in Nazareth, Pa., Andretti was raised near Indianapolis, and growing up it became - and remained - his goal to win at the Mecca of auto racing - The Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Like his father and uncle before him, Andretti first joined the big leagues of racing in the Indy PPG/CART Series in 1987.

Last year, with Front Row Motorsports and Andretti behind the wheel, Front Row completed its most successful season to date and qualified for all the Sprint Cup races, finishing inside the precious top 35 guaranteed starting positions. Andretti did his usual moonlight appearance at the Indianapolis 500. Only this time Andretti did it with a friend and previous boss, The King, Richard Petty, as a co-entrant and for the first time in his illustrious career, Petty was a participant in IndyCars.

The 2010 event should continue the excitement and heated competition that marked last summers chase that attracted 163 racers in 17 classes who attacked the 12.42 mile course with 156 turns to the 14,115-foot summit.

To date, a total of 152 racers and drivers have registered for the 2010 event, including 16 returning champions from last summers showdowns in all classes.

The popular Fan Fest, presented by Budweiser, which attracted thousands of fans to downtown Colorado Springs to meet the drivers and racers, see their cars, trucks and motorcycles, and enjoy music, food and special events, is set for June 25, from 5-10 p.m.

ANDRETTI'S "GRAND SLAM"

excerpt

Monday, May 3, 2010

John Andretti's famous heritage includes his uncle Mario, cousin Michael and second-cousin Marco. But it isn't his all-star lineage that is setting him apart in motorsports.

Prior to finishing ninth in Saturday's Road Runner Turbo Indy 300 at Kansas Speedway, Andretti had started five NASCAR Cup races at Kansas with a highest finish of 14th in 2002. He also has a Nationwide Series start in 2006 and a Camping World Truck Series start in 2005.

He completed his own "Grand Slam of Kansas Speedway" by running in an IZOD IndyCar Series race for Andretti Autosport.

"I had never been here in an IndyCar," Andretti said. "I've been here in Cup, Nationwide and a Truck. It drives completely different in an IndyCar. In those other cars you use the whole race track, but in the IndyCar you used the bottom of the race track. You feel the bumps more. This is one of the more difficult ovals they run on and without a lot of cautions pit road is difficult to get to."

Andretti Autosport had five cars in Saturday's race: Tony Kanaan was third, Ryan Hunter-Reay fifth, John Andretti ninth, Danica Patrick 11th and Marco Andretti 13th.

Andretti used the race at Kansas Speedway as a warm-up for the 94th Indianapolis 500 on May 30.

"I can't be disappointed with this," Andretti said of his finish. "I felt if we finished in the top 10 that would be better than I could expect and we finished ninth. We ran up there, we ran good and we ran good on the long runs. Like everybody, I think we wish (Scott) Dixon hadn't caught it quite so good because then we could have finished a little better, but I'm pleased. We weren't perfect, but it was good for me. I had a good time."

John Andretti's desire to race any type of car is what sets him apart from today's more specialized drivers. And, it left a positive impression on the youngest Andretti in IndyCar.

"John is one of us to where he has the passion for it and just loves to drive," Marco Andretti said. "And, he's good."

John Andretti is just as comfortable in a NASCAR Camping World Truck as he is an IndyCar. He has the feel for the Nationwide Series car just the same as in the Sprint Cup ride.

That makes him either a man of all (racing) seasons or a driver without a full-time series.

"I'm pretty much homeless," Andretti said. "I like racing. I'm at the point where I want to spend time with my kids. I don't want them leaving the house and not knowing who their dad was. So I'm running a limited schedule. When I run an IndyCar I feel like I'm 18 again. Even though I've raced IndyCar for years it's like starting over again. That is good for a driver."

The decision to compete in a race before the Indy 500 is an important one because he will already be familiar with his team when the Indianapolis Motor Speedway opens on May 15.

"For me the agenda is different than the other drivers and it is to get a good race in," Andretti said. "Their focus is how to win and I'm coming off the bench warming up. It's to get a car and establish a baseline and work with the team. We are looking for a solid race and as good as the car is and the team is we can have a good result.

"It's getting used to the team and the engineering staff and working with teammates. I've never really had teammates throughout my career. I'm kind of like the new guy on the block. I have a lot to learn and time is going to help. A couple years ago I ran the Indianapolis 500 and then four races afterwards. If I could have run those four races before Indy I would have been better at Indy. So that is why we decided to do this race."

While A.J. Foyt and Mario Andretti were legendary for their diversity in driving other cars, there are few drivers today that get to run in more than one series. Danica Patrick is trying the NASCAR Nationwide Series this year with JR Motorsports while remaining a full-time IndyCar competitor.

But Andretti is heading back to the good old days when drivers could be just as comfortable racing against the IndyCar drivers as they were racing against NASCAR's best.

John Andretti Finishes 9th at Kansas

Saturday, May 1, 2010

In a warm-up race for this month's Indianapolis 500, John Andretti drove the #43 Window World Honda/Dallara to a 9th place finish in the Road Runner Turbo Indy 300 at Kansas Speedway. This weekend's race was a prime opportunity for the Richard Petty Motorsports / Andretti Autosport team to shake down the car in preparation for the Indy 500 on May 30th.

Andretti started 17th out of a field of 27. He dropped 4 positions on the start, but climbed slowly forward over the first half of the race to break into the top 10, where he remained for most of the remainder of the race. The car appeared to have some front end grip issues, however the outing proved to be solid and no doubt will provide a large amount of valuable data for Indianapolis.

This month's Indianapolis 500 will be John Andretti's 11th attempt and 4th in the last four years.
